I recorded the Democratic primary debate this week in hopes that it would illuminate some of the bigger issues in the campaign, like gas hitting four dollars a gallon in the Chicago area. Or the nation marking its fifth year of war in Iraq. Or the rising rates of home foreclosure and unemployment. But I decided not to watch after reading the recaps and discovering that most of the debate focused on politics and candidate gaffes. Yes, the Democratic primary campaign has taken a nasty turn. I wouldn’t be surprised if an Obama vs. McCain general election turns out to be a more civil affair.
