You know that uneasy feeling that comes with the economy shedding half-a-million jobs in a month? That’s the same feeling journalists have been living with for the past few years as newspapers lost revenue to free services like Craigslist and Yahoo News. To keep shareholders happy, papers have axed reporters by the dozens, or even the hundreds. Take my hometown Chicago Tribune, for example, which is on the fast track to becoming nothing more than a collection of columnists and wire stories. It’s competition, the Chicago Sun-Times, is already there. And the less said about the once proud, once independent Chicago Reader, the better.
