Frazz (1/3/09)

I happened to drive past an oil refinery in Lockport, Illinois the day after Christmas when it was dark, foggy, rainy and unseasonably warm. Even though temperatures were hovering in the mid-fifties, the smoke from the refinery smokestacks escaped at less than a 45 degree angle. At least that’s what it looked like from the ground. It was hard to tell since several smokestacks were topped by roiling fires and the sky was so filled with dimly illuminated smoke that it made the whole scene resemble a war zone.
