Pooch Cafe (1/11/09)

Here’s a strip that makes it strongest, most indelible impression right out of the gate. I can take or leave the four panels that make up the bulk of the strip (although the final, “sleeps with the fish” panel is quite charming). But the first, and largest, panel is a striking rendering of the classic Godfather poster featuring the main character from Pooch Cafe. That dog is genuinely expressive and it’s surprising how well his sunken eyes, steady frown, and black and white tux establish a somber mood. The image is funny, striking and expertly rendered. I can only hope that newspapers didn’t shear it off in an effort to save space on the Sunday comics page.
