Candorville (1/18/09)

Of all the art I’ve seen commemorating Barack Obama’s election, this comic strip may be the most affecting. The dozens of photographs in the background give a true sense of the years of struggle that culminated in a black man winning the presidency. I especially like the fact that some faces are visible while others are cut off or slightly blurred, suggesting that the American story is authored by more people than we can possibly know. Obama’s bowed head gives the sense that he understands and is humbled by this history, an attitude that I hope and expect he will carry into office.

Update: This remarkable strip is also available as an 11″ x 17″ poster.
