Cul de Sac (4/9/09)

By all rights, the second panel of this strip should be a failure. The drawing simply illustrates the text instead of supplementing it or providing a visual counterpoint. But what that panel lacks in variety it makes up for in expressiveness. The ridiculous dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny and the image, though technically redundant, is so wonderfully silly and bizarre that it feels as if we’re getting vital information. The baffled look on the kid’s face as he realizes his rear is fastened to a scrapbook is simply priceless.
