Frazz (4/13/09)

The long, cold, lingering winter has left Chicago’s streets in a state of disrepair and its citizens in no mood to celebrate potholes. The severity of all this cracked concrete came into sharp relief this past weekend when, buoyed by a recent job offer and the promise of a federal tax credit, I decided to view a house on the outskirts of the city. My girlfriend and I were excited to learn about this moderately priced brick bungalow, given that it was within walking distance of a train station, a shopping mall, a movie theater and an enormous park. Unfortunately, the drive down Narragansett Avenue was bumpy enough to total a Hummer and the house itself suffered from water damage. Even if the property had been flawless, the state of the roads would have caused us to think long and hard before putting in a bid.
