Although the winter solstice usually inspires me to celebrate, it has somehow managed to underwhelm me this year. No fluorescent flag football in a darkened forest preserve. No flashlight battle in an unlit corner of a public park. Not even a “shortest day of the year” party at a crummy dive bar. In fact, I needed this strip to remind me of the significance of today. Not that the overcast sky beginning to darken at 3:30 in the afternoon wouldn’t have eventually done the trick. At least tomorrow will bring an incrementally longer period of sunlight, as will the next day, and the next day…
