Cul De Sac (12/24/09)

Part of what makes Cul De Sac a joy to read is its matter-of-fact treatment of the impossible. A handful of recent strips have shown the mother’s garish sweater sprouting a holiday design of some sort, seemingly out of thin air. As she’s struggled to conjure a Christmas pattern for her daughter, she’s accidentally brought other symbols (such as a creepy Halloween skeleton) to bear on the fabric of her garment. Given this background, today’s spontaneous Christmas message comes not as an inexplicable non sequitur but rather as a wondrous continuation of the strip’s weird charm.
