Mutts (1/1/10)

As the just departed decade came to a close, a lot of people took it upon themselves to bash the aughts, and 2009 in particular, as the worst of times. But were things really that bad, or are we failing to see some significant silver linings? True, the decade that began with 9/11 and ended with the global financial crisis left a lot of misery in its wake. But when I look back on 2009, I can’t help but notice the stock market recovery, the dwindling number of job losses, the thwarting of a potential terrorist attack, and the nationwide drop in violent crime (almost unheard of during a recession). There are still plenty of sobering issues to address, such as the high unemployment rate and the gaping holes in many state budgets, but there also seems to be a slight wind at our backs as we journey into the teens.
