Sherman’s Lagoon (1/13/10)

Thanks to Sherman’s Lagoon, I wore a blue shirt today in support of the oceans. And while I think we should do everything we can to protect the planet, I also think we should exercise caution when crafting our environmental policies. For example, Michigan and Wisconsin are suing Illinois to force the closing of locks connecting Lake Michigan to Chicago’s Sanitary and Ship Canal. Their argument is that open locks will allow an invasive species of carp to reach the Great Lakes, thereby destroying native species that are popular with fishermen. But if the locks are closed shut, then untold numbers of cargo ships would need to find an alternate route and all the area businesses that support shipping would go under. I’m moving to a neighborhood close to the canal, so I have more than a passing interest in those businesses remaining open. The U.S. Supreme Court will decide the case this week, and I can only hope they tread lightly.
