Pearls Before Swine (2/12/10)

Valentine’s Day is unique in its ability to provoke all sorts of reactions. Some people go the decadent route, buying gourmet candies and reserving tables at fancy restaurants. Other people go the tacky route, picking up Whitman’s Samplers and reserving rooms at “romantic spas” along the Interstate. Still others view the holiday with deep, abiding cynicism, seeing its commercial origins and its placement in the dead of winter as an opportunity to rail against all things romantic. As for my fiance and I, we tend to keep things low-key. We enjoy Valentine’s Day, but don’t feel the need to go overboard. This year, all we’ll need to keep us happy is a heart-shaped pizza and a bottle of wine. (And each other, of course, but that goes without saying.)
