Frazz (2/21/10)

One of the drawbacks of owning a home is the drudgery of shoveling and salting the sidewalks. It’s been years since I’ve had to this, and after dealing with a massive snowstorm in early February I can report that neither salt nor industrial-strength ice melter has any effect on those truly slippery patches. In fact, one of my downspouts became so clogged with melting snow that I had to clear its base using a kettle of boiling water, a hammer, and nearly all of my patience. I could have poured all the salt I wanted onto that fast-growing patch of ice, but it wouldn’t have made a lick of difference.
