Frazz (5/16/10)

Forget the disco ball, I can’t believe this teacher is still using a 16mm film projector in her classroom. Talk about ancient technology. If a disco ball recalls the ’70s, then a film projector recalls the ’50s, when educational shorts were all the rage. In fact, there was such a demand for these time-wasters that it was entirely possible for an independent filmmaker to earn a living shooting earnest instructional footage, splicing that footage together in a halfway decent manner, and selling the results to school districts throughout the country. It’s not that educational films don’t exist anymore, but it seems to me that a child’s formative experiences with technology today would most likely involve animated characters on a computer screen and not young men with buzz cuts on a projector screen.
