Pooch Cafe (7/8/10)

When I was in the sixth grade my teacher explained to me that the maps in her classroom were suddenly out of date. See that enormous country in the upper-right corner of the map? The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics? Well…poof. Up until that point, communism had been a vague notion in the back my grade school mind. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was a complete afterthought. (Never mind that China, the biggest country in the world and a rapidly industrializing superpower in its own right, was under communist control.) Those of us who grew up in 1990s America grew up in a world without “commies.” The idea of a Marxist society struck us as quaint, which I suppose made us pretty damn fortunate, overall.
