I think of myself as a fairly literate person, but my instincts regarding the words “fortuitous” and “serendipitous” turned out to be wrong. I thought there was a significant distinction between the words, with “fortuitous” describing good fortune and “serendipitous” describing dumb luck. As it turns out, both words describe accidental events that are also favorable to someone. In fact, “fortuitous” is listed as one of the definitions for “serendipitous.” Words don’t get more synonymous than that.
