Anyone who thinks American culture hasn’t gotten raunchier over the years should rummage through the newspaper archive at their local library. Scan the microfilm from a few decades ago and you might find some underwear ads scattered throughout. Flip through the yellowed pages from the early part of this century and you may see a handful of lingerie ads. But open one of today’s tabloids and you’ll be bombarded with ads for libido supplements, all of them featuring near-nude women and the word “sex” in large type (and none of them calling attention to the fact that their product has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration). There are also ads for strip clubs buried in some newspapers. These are tucked away for now, but give it a few years; they’ll be plastered all over the sports section.
