There’s been a lot of debate in recent months over the soon-to-expire Bush tax cuts. President Obama has argued that the tax rates for couples making less than $250,000 a year should be extended, while the rates for couples making more than $250,000 a year should revert to their previous, higher levels. Congressional Republicans have countered that raising taxes in a recession is a bad idea and argued that all rates should be frozen for at least two years. Well, count me as part of a small minority, but I think the entire package of tax cuts should be allowed to expire and that all resulting revenue should be used to reduce the federal budget deficit. I am rooting for this outcome because it strikes me as responsible, even though it would mean higher taxes for me, personally. Are you drinking a beverage right now? If so, I hope you didn’t just spray it out of your nose.
