Bizarro (10/10/10)

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means anything and everything has been shaded pink, including the comics. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer, so I’m sympathetic to these gestures. Still, I can’t help feeling that something has been lost in this sea of symmetry. The overarching message of the pink campaign seems to be, “Breast cancer exists and it is a problem.” But where are the appeals for research money, the pleas to keep up with self-examinations, and the tips on how to mitigate risk factors? From a purely aesthetic standpoint, most of the participating strips didn’t even do much with their new, potentially visually arresting, color schemes. Bizarro was a welcome exception, with its moody alley awash in an eerie (and fairly realistic) shade of pink.
