When I was in my mid-twenties, I practiced Tai Chi for a couple of years. I discovered the calming, meditative martial art in college, when I took two classes taught by a curiously Irish Tai Chi teacher. Several years later, I started attending weekend classes at a small studio. For a while, I was practicing every day and working my way up to weapons (particularly swords). Then I stopped practicing, for a whole host of reasons: time, money, other interests, and maybe, just maybe, exposure to pharmaceutical commercials that made me feel silly about the whole enterprise.
