Moderately Confused (1/22/11)

A few days ago, I saw an ad on the train that seemed like it had direct access to the zeitgeist. It was a public safety ad that showed a close-up of a smart phone bearing the following message: “Are you aware of your surroundings?” Plenty of people aren’t, seeing as they spend every spare moment staring at their touchscreens. Sure, they gain access to Facebook and e-mail and SMS, but they also lose touch with the physical world. The streets they walk and the people they brush up against are reduced to background noise. If we stop paying attention to our surroundings, then whatever will we have to text about?
