Thatababy (4/3/11)

April 3, 2011

This cookie-themed artwork might look trite, but it has the potential to be truly profound. Sure, the image is currently one of a girl in a sailboat (or a baby in a stroller…or a Martian in a spacecraft, I’m not quite sure) but just wait until the ants get to it. Surely, the artist is constructing his masterpiece in such a way that its true meaning will only be revealed once a sugar-crazed colony of insects starts crawling up the wall and eating it bite by bite. Will the final image be one of destruction and rot, or of celebration at a glorious return to nature? Whatever the finished piece looks like, it will surely be worthy of the Louvre, ants and all.

This is one fantastic alphabet book, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I know every single one of the references, except for Gort. Apparently, this large tin fellow made an appearance in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Judging by the company he keeps in this comic strip, it’s a movie I need to check out, and pronto. Here’s hoping subsequent Sunday editions of Thatababy reveal subsequent pages in this alphabet book…I is for Iron Giant, he grunts, does not speak…J is for Joker, clown face, what a freak…all the way to Z.
